You can choose from a variety of sports classes for students of all ages. Our instructors are skilled at teaching and inspiring young athletes. Classes for grades 9-12 are taught by De Anza College head coaches. (Click or scroll down to learn more about the instructors.)

Classes are offered at local school sites, including St. Joseph of Cupertino and Cupertino Middle School. Classes for high school-age students are held at De Anza College.

Here are two of the winning De Anza College coaches who are teaching Academy classes this year.

Instructor: Dawnis Guevara

Summer Course: Volleyball


Dawnis Guevara is head volleyball coach at De Anza College and was a professional player for the San Jose Storm for four years.

Dawnis attended San José State University on a full-ride athletic scholarship for four years. She has played with Olympic and professional beach volleyball players.

She holds an AAA beach rating and has been named the Coast Conference Coach of the Year in seven different years.

Summer Courses: Speed Training and Strength Development


Tony Santos is head football coach at De Anza College and has coached community college and high school football for 28 seasons.

A former head coach at Westmont High School, Anthony has had six back-to-back league championships. 

He was named Coach of the Year in De Anza's division three times, most recently in 2018, and Charlie Wedemeyer North All Star Head Coach.

Course Descriptions

COMPETITIVE BADMINTON

For students entering grades 9-12: This course will train students in the fundamental skills and tactics they need to compete in badminton at the high school level. The emphasis will be on improving footwork and strokes – including net, drop, clear and smash shots – as well as strategic and tactical awareness. This course is taught by Mark Landefeld, three-time Coast Conference Coach of the Year, and members of the two-time state champion De Anza College women’s badminton coaching staff.


BASKETBALL SKILLS AND DRILLS

For students entering Grades 9-12: This course breaks basketball down to the fundamental skills that all athletes need to succeed. Coaches will lead the athletes through game-speed drills and exercises, focusing on ball handling, passing, shooting, defense and rebounding. Students will also learn about game strategy. This course is taught by the De Anza College head basketball coach. 


BASKETBALL

For students entering grades 6-9: Students will improve their basketball skills and develop their appreciation of this exciting, fast-paced sport. Through a variety of drills and games, students will learn and practice the fundamentals of dribbling, passing and shooting. Teamwork, self-confidence and sportsmanship will be stressed on a daily basis. Accommodations will be made for all skill levels. This is a co-ed class that is held indoors. Rubber-soled athletic shoes are required.


BASKETBALL SKILLS AND DRILLS

For students entering grades 3-5: Students will improve their basketball skills and develop an appreciation for this exciting, fast-paced sport. Through a variety of drills and games, students will learn and practice the fundamentals of dribbling, passing and shooting. Teamwork, self-confidence and sportsmanship will be stressed on a daily basis. Modifications will be made to accommodate all skill levels. This is a coed class that is held outdoors. Rubber-soled athletic shoes are required. Students should also bring a water bottle, sunscreen and hat.


FIELD GAMES FOR FITNESS AND FUN

For students entering grades 3-5 – Students will learn about fitness and health as they play a variety of games in this highly active course, which is designed to get students moving before the academic day begins. Activities include soccer, track and field, obstacle courses and stretching techniques – in a fun and relaxed environment that will help students perform at their best throughout the day!


SOFTBALL SKILLS AND DRILLS

For students entering grades 9-12: Students in this class will learn the fundamentals of softball while practicing a variety of drills and playing in games. The class will cover throwing, catching and hitting the ball, along with game strategy and the core values of effort, teamwork, self-esteem and respect for others. This course is taught De Anza College softball team coaches and players. 


SPEED TRAINING

For students entering grades 9-12: Students will perform challenging drills to increase their cardiovascular endurance, using quick-burst and change-of-direction drills aimed at improving footwork. The class will cover the techniques and fundamentals to get faster for any sport. 


STRENGTH DEVELOPMENT

For students entering grades 9-12: Students will perform strength-development exercises, learn proper weigth-training form, develop warm-up routines and gain basic understanding of how to enrich their physical fitness and athletic performance through weight training.


SWIMMING TRAINING AND TECHNIQUES

For students entering grades 9-12: This course focuses on swimming fundamentals and training strategies.  The De Anza College head coach for swimming and diving coach will teach this course. Students can choose from one of two levels during the same session.

Level 1: Students will practice different strokes for the width of the pool to improve strength, consistency and technique. Students will have the opportunity to learn new strokes and flip turns, while refining any strokes they already know.

Level 2: For swimmers who have already mastered the basics of freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly, this is an opportunity to receive coaching on improved stroke efficiency, quick and efficient flip turns and dives, and ways to build strength and endurance.


TRACK AND FIELD TRAINING AND TECHNIQUES

For students entering grades 9-12: This course will include workouts and supplemental training methods to improve students’ running form, endurance and understanding of various events such as jumps, hurdles and sprints. These training methods are used in the De Anza College track and field program, and will help students improve as competitive athletes.


VOLLEYBALL SKILLS AND DRILLS

For students entering grades 9-12: This class is designed to help students improve their volleyball skills and develop a greater appreciation for this amazing team sport. Students will practice basic moves and learn about game strategy while engaging in drills and matches. This course is taught by De Anza College volleyball team coaches and players.


WATER POLO SKILLS AND DRILLS

For students entering grades 9-12: This course will introduce and expand fundamental water polo skills, drills and strategies. Students will be taught proper passing and shooting techniques to build teamwork and tactical approaches. Basic game rules and concepts will be covered through engaging drills and game simulations. Students who take this class must already have the ability to tread water and swim freestyle for three minutes without stopping. This class is taught by De Anza college water polo coaches.
