A Note About Academic Senate Meetings
Academic Senate meetings will continue to be HyFlex (combination of in-person and on Zoom). Under Governor Newsom's emergency orders, Zoom participation satisfies Brown Act requirements for a publicly accessible meeting location. Anyone may attend any Academic Senate meeting in-person in MLC 255 or via Zoom using the link in the meeting agenda page.Academic Senate Winter 2023 Office Hours
Academic Senate President, Cheryl Jaeger Balm, will have in-person office hours Mondays 12:30 - 1:25 pm in Admin 117. To request a Zoom meeting during office hours instead, email balmcheryl@fhda.edu.
Academic Senate Vice President, Erik Woodbury, will have in-person office hours Tuesdays 11:30 am - 12:30 pm in Admin 117. To request a Zoom meeting during office hours instead, email woodburyerik@fhda.edu.

About the Academic Senate
The Academic Senate is represented by all full-time and part-time members of the De Anza faculty and Foothill-De Anza Board of Trustees in promoting the quality of community college education.
The Academic Senate includes all faculty members. Division/area senators and officers comprise the Executive Committee, which meets Mondays 2:30-4:20 p.m.
Under Academic Senate purview (10+1):
The Academic Senate is an organization whose primary function is to make recommendations with respect to academic and professional matters, namely, the following policy development and implementation matters:
- Curriculum1 including establishing prerequisites and placing courses within disciplines
- Degree and certificate requirements3
- Grading Policies1
- Educational program development2, including Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs)
- Standards or policies regarding student preparation and success1
- Governance structures as related to faculty roles2
- Faculty role in accreditation2
- Policies for faculty professional development activities1
- Policies for Program Review2
- Processes for institutional planning and budget development2 including Instructional Planning and Budget
- Other Academic and Professional Matters
1The FHDA Board of Trustees relies primarily on the advice and judgment of the Academic Senates on these matters.
2The FHDA Board of Trustees, De Anza administrators and Academic Senate shall reach mutual agreement on these matters.
3The Board relies primarily on the Academic Senate for GE and program-specific degree and certificate requirements, but the bodies shall reach mutual agreement on units for degrees

Honoring Sandra Diaz
The Academic Senate Executive Committee has approved a resolution honoring our Nursing
faculty colleague, Sandra Diaz, who died of COVID-19 complications on Jan. 29.
Sandra enriched the De Anza community, first as a student, and later through her tireless service as a part-time and then full-time faculty member, mentor, colleague and friend from 2016 to 2021. The resolution honors her outstanding service and contributions to De Anza College and the surrounding communities.
