Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month
Celebrated from September 15th to October 15th in the United States to recognize the contributions of Hispanic and Latino individuals to culture, history, and society.
Gabriel José de la Concordia García Márquez, known to the Hispanic world as Gabriel García Márquez, was born on March 6, 1927, in Aracataca, Colombia. He grew up in a small, coastal town surrounded by lush vegetation and a rich cultural heritage. García Márquez was raised by his maternal grandparents, who filled his early years with tales of folklore, superstition, and magical realism, sparking his imagination and love for storytelling. In the 1950s and 1960s, García Márquez began to establish himself as writer. His early works, such as "Leaf Storm" (1955) and "No One Writes to the Colonel" (1961), showed the influence of his journalism background and his fascination with the political and social dynamics of Latin America. However, it was his groundbreaking novel "One Hundred Years of Solitude" (1967) . The novel, with its intricate narrative and blending of reality and fantasy, introduced the world to the genre of magicalrealism. It told the multi-generational story of the Buendía family in the fictional town of Macondo, drawing on García Márquez's childhood memories and the history of Colombia. LEARN MORE
