Lydia Hearn

Lydia HearnAs interim vice president of Instruction, Lydia Hearn oversees the administration of all transfer and vocational instructional programs, as well as faculty negotiations, tenure review and the areas reporting to the interim associate vice president, which include equity and engagement, the Library, online education and professional development.

Hearn has extensive leadership experience at De Anza, along with a deep commitment to student equity. She joined the college as an English faculty member in 2000 and was president of the Academic Senate from 2005-2007, interim dean of the Language Arts Division, from 2007-2008, and interim associate vice president of instruction on two occasions – from 2008-2010 and again for six months in 2021-2022..

She also has played a key role in several important initiatives, including as tri-chair for the collegewide strategic planning effort and project director for the Title III Strengthening Institutions Program grant. She previously created the DARE (Development and Readiness Education) Task Force in 2009 and was co-chair through 2010. From 2017-2019, she coordinated the campaign to expand use of Open Educational Resources. She was co-coordinator for Guided Pathways from 2019-2021.

As a faculty member, Lydia has been involved in several Learning Communities: She was an instructor and co-coordinator for the Puente Project from 2013-2021. She co-founded and served as an instructor for REACH (Reading, English, Athletics, Counseling and Humanities), and taught for Sankofa Scholars – a forerunner to the Umoja program. She also taught in Summer Bridge and coordinated the Honors program.

Hearn was the English Department and Language Arts Division scheduler from 2011-2021, after serving as the Title III/Basic Skills Initiative grants administrator and director in 2008-2010. She was the budget coordinator for the grants in 2010-2012. She was the instructional liaison on the first AANAPISI grant awarded to the college in 2008, and served on the work team for the 2021 AANAPISI application. She was instructional liaison for the major conversion to the Banner system in 2009, and co-project manager for the curriculum management system conversion in 2018-2019.
